Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor that initially develops in the mucosa (surface layer of the wall of the esophagus), then it gradually invades the different layers of the wall of the esophagus. Cancer cells can also break away from the original malignant tumor and borrow: - the lymphatic vessels and invade the lymph nodes - the blood vessels and invade other organs such as the liver, lungs, bones and metastasize. Surgical treatment of esophageal cancer (esophagectomy) is offered depending on the stage of the tumor: for localized early cancers or for locally advanced cancers, in this case most often associated with preoperative treatment with chemotherapy or radiochemotherapy. . The type of esophagectomy offered depends on the location of the tumor on the esophagus. For cancers of the cervical esophagus or the upper third of the thoracic esophagus, the procedure will consist of a total esophagectomy.
