Esophageal manometry is a test that assesses the pressures along the esophagus, and the degree of closure or opening of the lower esophageal sphincter, the one that separates the esophagus from the stomach.
This test is particularly indicated in patients with swallowing disorders. It is also performed before certain surgeries, for a problem of hiatus hernia or gastroesophageal acid reflux. It also provides information in the event of dysphagia (sensations of blockage when swallowing), chest pain without a cardiac cause, in certain musculonervous diseases and in the event of scleroderma, an autoimmune disorder.
