Scintigraphy is a nuclear medicine medical imaging method that produces a functional image by the administration of a radiopharmaceutical drug (MRP) whose radiation is detected once it has been picked up by the organ or target at examine. The patient receives molecules or radioactive isotopes which will attach themselves to the organs or tissues that one seeks to explore. Then a machine, usually a gamma camera, detects the rays emitted by the body. Finally, the image obtained is reconstructed. The dose of radioactivity is kept low so as to minimize the risks associated with irradiation. For example, a bone scan does not irradiate more than other imaging tests such as an x-ray or a CT scan1. It can be used to visualize several parts of the body, depending on the tracer used and what you want to see. It allows to see the shape and functioning of the organ, the presence of primary or secondary tumor, the origin of pain or disease. It can also be used to confirm an uncertain diagnosis.
